Welcome to the Fellowship Hall
Now don’t be shy. Come on in and find yourself a seat. We may not have matching chairs, but every one of them has held a story. There’s a casserole dish on the counter, a pound cake cooling by the window, and mercy, someone brought the good tea. You’re officially in the Fellowship Hall, the heart of Churchlady Bakes.
If you’ve ever found comfort in a casserole or friendship over frosting, you’re in the right place.
Why I Started This Blog
For years I’ve been baking my way through the greatest hits of Southern hospitality: cookies as big as your hand, cakes that deserve their own choir, and snacks that could start a revival.
At every market table, folks ask the same questions:
“Where’d this recipe come from?”
“What’s the story behind that cookie name?”
“Who in the world is Miss Betty?”
That’s when I realized: the real magic of Churchlady Bakes isn’t just in the butter and brown sugar. It’s in the stories.
Every cookie, cake, candy, and blessed cracker on my table has roots in a potluck memory. The banana pudding Sister Clara made for every funeral meal, the brown-butter pecan pie that vanished before the prayer ended, the cheese straws that somehow showed up at every wedding and every baby shower.
Those recipes carried laughter, gossip, grace, and sometimes a hint of competition. All the things that make fellowship feel like family. Somewhere between the Jell-O salads and the foil-wrapped leftovers, I realized I wasn’t just baking. I was preserving a heritage.
Every Bite Has a Backstory
Take the Pastor’s Favorite Banana Pudding Cookie- born out of one too many socials where the pudding bowl was scraped clean before I got a spoonful. Or Miss Betty’s Newfangled Brown Butter Pecan, inspired by that one lady who swore she’d “updated” her recipe when really she just doubled the sugar.
Even the Spicy Baptist Church Crackers have a sermon in them, proof that a little fire never hurt anyone’s testimony.
Because recipes without stories are just instructions. Recipes with people in them? Those are heirlooms.
Why Now
Life gets busy, and traditions slip through our fingers if we don’t grab hold. I don’t want the next generation thinking “potluck” means a Pinterest board. I want them to remember what it felt like to stand in line for Sister Hattie’s seven-layer salad, balancing a paper plate like it was fine china while somebody’s kid played tag between your knees.
This blog is my way of keeping those memories warm, sharing not just what I bake, but why I bake it. To remind us that food is fellowship, grace can be served on a paper plate, and joy often smells like something cooling on the counter.
